Course Description: This course comprises a series of lectures on English and American literature, arranged in chronological order and conducted with a view to providing students with both critical insights into individual works and an overview of English and American literary history. Due to the tremendous scope of English and American literature and the limitation of class hours, the lectures will focus on the most established authors and their most representative works, thus leaving out many important authors and works. Therefore, students are encouraged to complement the teaching of these lectures with their own readings. Course Requirements: ü close reading of assignments before class and preparation for the question session in class; ü contribution to class discussion; ü presentation on a subject (a book, an author, a literary movement…) chosen from the listed lectures, and submission of a written report on the same subject.
