This literature course is designed for the first-year postgraduate students majoring in English literature and the course is to introduce to them the research methodology of doing research about English literature, specifically how to read, analyze and write about English literature critically and academically. The course will emphasize the close connection between reading and writing, for we cannot write well unless we can read well. It will highlight how to think critically about literature and it will introduce the elements about fiction, drama, and poetry, and inform how to write about each genre. It will teach about the elements of clear writing and how to improve the format of the manuscript, and how to write a research paper. Students need to read the assigned materials before the class to prepare for the activities during the class. In the class students will learn how to conduct academic research about English literature. The students are expected to listen to the lectures attentively and participate in the class discussions and presentations actively. After the class students are supposed to finish the tasks of writing in order to solidify the knowledge learnt and enhance critical thinking ability.
