课程介绍

This is an introductory course on syntax with a specific focus on Systemic Functional Grammar. We’ll start with discussions around general issues that different approaches to syntax address. We’ll then explore how the notion of system can be used in describing and explaining syntactic phenomena. The course is not designed to give you an overview of different syntactic approaches, nor does it provide a comprehensive introduction to English grammar from a particular perspective. Neither of these aims can be realistically achieved in an introductory syntax course. What the course does provide is a space for you to explore a particular way of thinking about grammar, which hopefully will serve as a springboard for you to continue your study of syntax in the future. For each week, you’re required to do a chapter-length reading before you come to class. The content of the semester will be around these readings. You can send me any questions regarding the readings. We will discuss these questions in class if time allows.
